More energy please!

D-Ribose is a naturally occurring sugar found in all living cells and essential for life. Both ATP and RNA contain D-Ribose, it actually facilitates the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate). ATP is used to produce vital cellular energy. D-Ribose is made in your body already but really slowly and is not found in food. It is depleted very easily through stress, injuries, aging and disease. Most people will benefit from taking this, it should be considered for anyone with fatigue, pain, heart issues, chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia and for athletes/general exercise.

More about D-Ribose:
  • Enhances recovery of energy levels of postischemic cardiac patients
  • Shown to greatly improve quality of life for people with fibromyalgia and chronic fatigue. (Teitelbaum,46)
  • Jump starts the energy process if you are depleted
  • Maintains healthy energy levels in heart and muscle tissue
  • Supports body at a cellular level to increase stamina and positively handle stress, work, play etc.

When we consume D-Ribose, the body recognizes that it is different from other sugars and preserves it for the vital work of actually making the energy molecule that powers our hearts, muscles, brains, and every other tissue in the body. D-Ribose regulates how much energy we have in our bodies, and for those suffering from fatigue, muscle soreness, stiffness, and a host of related medical complications, the relief found in energy restoration can be life changing.

General: 2 teaspoons/ 5 grams once a day. Preferably in the morning, not too close to bedtime.*

People with Chronic Fatigue/Fibromyalgia: begin with D-Ribose 5 grams 3x day for 2-3 weeks then twice a day. Do not take less than directed or you will not always reach optimal results.*

*If you become agitated, too energized or hyper-anxious just lower the dosage (either take just two servings or half of each serving) or take with food.

Marvelous Magnesium

I have a minor love affair with Peter Gillham’s Natural Calm Magnesium powder.

Magnesium is one of the minerals that our body needs to stay functioning properly. It often gets out publicized by calcium. The thing with calcium is that most people  get enough of it, they just cannot use it properly. There are a few factors to consider when absorbing and assimilating calcium but the biggest one is hydration. You must have the proper levels of minerals to absorb and assimilate your calcium. That is where magnesium comes in. Most people have no idea that they should be supplementing with magnesium because no one ever talks about it! It is just as important and just as impactful. Unless calcium and magnesium are properly balanced, magnesium becomes depleted (too much calcium can itself deplete magnesium levels). This can result in an inability to quickly recover from stress and can itself be a source of stress.

Magnesium is responsible for the following processes in the body:
  • Relaxing of the heart muscle after every beat, keeps heart rhythm steady
  • Regulates blood sugar and blood pressure
  • Calms nerves
  • Produces and restores energy
  • Supports immune system
  • Works synergistically with calcium to strengthen bones

Many people complain of symptoms that can result from a lack of magnesium. Due to the fact that magnesium is so vital to so many bodily processes, deficiency can contribute to a wide variety of conditions, such as:

  • Stress
  • Fatigue and Low Energy
  • Inability to Sleep
  • Muscle Tension, Spasms & Cramps (Restless Legs)
  • Anxiousness and Nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Headaches
  • Weakness
  • PMS and Hormonal Imbalances
  • Weakening Bones
  • Abnormal Heart Rhythm
  • Calcification of Organs
  • Constipation

I take Natural Calm before bed. It’s like drinking a cup of tea, it’s good! The raspberry and lemon flavor is a little strong for me, I like the plain lemon the most. It relaxes my muscles and allows me to fall asleep easily. You can work up to three teaspoons, although three will really help you to go to the bathroom the next day (if you know what I mean). So experiment with what works for you. With the amount of stress we all go through everyday just on our way to work, magnesium levels are depleted easily, meaning that you could take this everyday and be fine. Even pregnant women, it really helps with leg cramps. One more thing…not all magnesium is created equal! This magnesium is extremely absorbable, make sure you aren’t wasting your time with cheap capsules.

You can find it here.

Sweet dreams…

Fabulously Fishy

The Facts
By now we have all heard about fish oil and the benefits of taking it. There are so many benefits that they would take forever to list; brain health: memory, depression, anxiety, Alzheimer’s, nervous system health, joint health, skin elasticity, hair health, fertility, basically life in general. Because we do not live in a culture in which we eat high amounts of small deep water fish (think anchovies, sardines, herring) we need to supplement. This way we can insure that we are getting enough vitamins A & D, EPA, and DHA. Our body can, if it is functioning perfectly, make EPA and DHA, but most people cannot make the conversion from linolenic acid. It’s important to get these acids, EPA and DHA, because this is how you make prostaglandins. Prostaglandins ANTI-inflame within your body. That means they remove inflammation. Inflammation has been determined as the main cause of aging within the body. Too much inflammation ages your heart and every other organ including your skin.

The kicker: in order to utilize all of these nutrients, you have to have a co-factor of vitamin K2. Vitamin K works synergistically with vitamins A & D. You will not absorb your cod liver oil unless your diet includes sources of vitamin K, including high quality grass fed butter, cheese or other high quality  (grass fed) saturated animal fats.

A note on fertility: Every woman and male trying to conceive should be on a high dosage of cod liver oil and butter. Children should all be on cod liver oil as well  because of their rapid brain development as well as general health. I will list doses below.

Because most of us are vitamin D deficient, we can safely take higher levels of vitamin A (from cod liver oil) than previously thought, as long as you eat enough foods with vitamin D along with it. Even if you are outside all summer, you still need to consume vitamin A as they work synergistically. You can get vitamin A from pastured chicken eggs and butter.

Choosing An Oil
You must be very careful with your choice of oils. Many oils are processed in an inappropriate way, have dangerous metals in them, have been stripped of natural vitamins (A & D) and are rancid. Your oil should come in a dark bottle and probably will not be sold at a Walgreens! Those oils will damage health, not build health.

(because the quality and potency of each brand of oil is different, these values will differ. If you buy an oil in the excellent section, simply use their recommendations).
Adults: 1 tsp or 5-10 capsules (about 2 grams)Pregnant/Nursing women: 2 tsp or 15 capsules (3 grams)
Children 3 months – 12 years: 1/2 tsp

-I give my two year old a teaspoon of Nordic Naturals flavored oil straight, she doesn’t mind it, or I put it in her smoothie (after it’s blended) or mix it in yogurt. I will be changing her oil to green pastures when we finish this bottle.

-Personally I have been taking Carlson’s 1000 mg cod liver oil gelatin capsules. I don’t like the liquid form. I -take 5 before bed. One day I would like to upgrade to one of the fermented brands in the excellent section, but i haven’t yet. It may seem expensive, but you get more for your money.

-When you are taking a supplement with vitamin D, it is always a good idea to test your vitamin D levels. Ask you doctor for a 25 Hydroxy Blood Test. You should have levels over 30 and hopefully closer to 50. This is usually only a problem if you spend a lot of time in the sun near the equator. If you are supplementing in the summer and getting a lot of sun, make sure you test. There is such a thing as too much of a good thing!
